Cast iron. Installed from the 1920s through the 1960s in various phases. Durable for decades but eventually rusts from inside out, especially in the bottom of the pipe where wastewater sits longest. Failures in Raleigh historic district laterals cluster into four common patterns.
Joint root intrusion in clay tile laterals with mature canopy above. Annual or biennial jetting keeps the line clear short term. The durable fix is CIPP lining to seal the joints permanently. Common in Oakwood, Cameron Park, and Five Points.
Total collapse of Orangeburg laterals at one or more sections. The fiber material has fully deteriorated and the pipe wall has lost integrity. Clearing alone cannot fix this. Full replacement is required.
Cast iron rot at the bottom of the pipe (the so-called “channel” failure). Wastewater has eroded through the lower half of the pipe wall over decades. Spot repair on a localized failure is sometimes possible. Widespread channel failure usually means full replacement.
