Navien NPE series units are the tankless water heater we install most frequently across Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh. The NPE-240A and NPE-180A are condensing units with built-in recirculation pump connections, stainless steel heat exchangers rated for 20-plus year service life, and cold climate performance down to -22°F — more than adequate for Triangle winters. Installation details specific to the Navien platform follow.
Navien NPE Series: Installation Specifics
Gas Supply
The NPE-240A requires 199,000 BTU/hour at full draw. The NPE-180A requires 150,000 BTU/hour. In most Triangle homes with 3/4-inch residential gas supply, only the NPE-180A can run on existing supply without upsizing. For whole-home coverage with simultaneous demand in a larger home, the NPE-240A is the correct unit — and it requires 1-inch supply or a short 3/4-inch run from the meter. We calculate the run length and pressure drop before specifying which unit fits your situation.
Venting
NPE series condensing units use PVC or CPVC vent pipe (not metal B-vent). Standard residential installations use 3-inch PVC for the NPE-180A and 4-inch PVC for the NPE-240A, with a maximum run length that varies by number of elbows. We follow Navien installation manual specifications for your specific run length and configuration.
Condensate Handling
The NPE condensing process produces acidic condensate (pH 3 to 4) that must drain to a floor drain or condensate neutralizer. Navien supplies a condensate neutralizer kit that raises pH to acceptable drain discharge levels. We install the neutralizer on every NPE installation — it protects the drain line and prevents the condensate backup faults that appear when the trap clogs.
Recirculation
The NPE series has a built-in recirculation pump port. For Triangle homes where the water heater is more than 30 feet from the farthest fixture, we install the recirculation pump and set up the timer or temperature-based activation. Navien’s ComfortFlow recirculation works with dedicated return lines or with a crossover valve at the farthest fixture point — we configure whichever your home’s plumbing accommodates.
Annual Maintenance on a Navien Installation
Triangle water at 9 to 11 GPG makes annual descaling non-optional on any Navien installation without a whole-home softener. The NPE service ports (hot outlet and cold inlet) are specifically designed for descaling pump connection. Annual service also includes condensate trap inspection and cleaning, inlet filter screen cleaning, and verification that recirculation timing is set correctly for the season. See Water Heater Maintenance and Descaling.
